Of course, if you want to, you can add the Incredible to the Android plan.
No need for U2nl, autostart.sh, etc.
Just APN backup for the mms settings.
I did use unrevoked3 to root and then installed the Incredible Froyo leak.
Works pretty nicely.

no rooting at all. Rooting is only for the U2nl, autostart.sh, etc settings that make your phone work with market and android app's. I don't have that yet, my speeds are very slow though on the internet. My plan is through my work, so I may just be on the standard $45 plan without extra Android/BB data.
