It is locked to T-Mobile UK, it was bought as the T-Mobile G2. I wish to move to three and currently want to unlock my phone for free. How can I do this, T-Mobile will only do it for £15 but I'm not willing to pay.

I searched online but couldn't find any free unlocking solution for a HTC HERO. So it is safe for you to get unlock code from any trusted paid unlocking site. Before that you can visit www.mobileunlockguide.com/htc-hero This site provides free unlocking instruction guide. This would help you understand unlocking process better.
