Hello, Swimming at the top and gulping for air is NOT a good sign!! It's a sign there's a problem with the water, it is not begging for food. There is either an ammonia spike because the tank is too small or has not completed the nitrogen cycle. Or its too warm - warm water has less oxygen and can suffocate a Goldfish (a true cold-water fish that requires high oxygenation). Those bubbles that come out of the bubble wall don't really oxygenate the tank, they're decorative. It's the surface movement that oxygenates. Good Luck + I Hope I Helped !
Why are all my fish going to the surface and eating bubbles? i have a 55 gallon tank..a filter for it..and 2 long bubble wall tubes that are running..I have 8 comet goldfish,2 guppies, and one that i dont know what it is called. They all swim around and then go to the surface as if they are eating but there is nothing there but air bubbles. My bubble wall is stuck to the bottom of the tank against the back wall it looks as if they are eating food but nothing is there but the bubbles made by my bubble wall my heater is at the lowest and it makes my water's temp around 78-80 i have the comet just because i wanted fish in my tank...
