    No, you do not HAVE to have it to make it work.
    The phone would work perfectly fine without it.
    Except... t-Mobile makes you get it. You can't have the phone and not have the data plan.
    IF t-Mobile has the same rule as alltel and verizon. Which it probably does.

    ...functional as in text, calls, etc? I've been thinking about posting an ad on craigslist to trade my phone for a black berry bold or curve, and I was wondering do you have to have the data plan for the phone to actually work.

    I understand you have to have it for the internet and email to work but what about text message and picture message and calling?
    I'm not getting it threw a tmobile retalier/store I'm trading phones with somebody off craigslist.
