What does "legal precedent " mean in the case of plagiarism and Martin Luther King Jr.?

A special committee at Boston University concluded unanimously that King had plagiarized the majority of his PhD dissertation, yet refused to take away his degree, Does that mean that any BU student can point to that case if they are accused of plagiarism?
