Pitchfork I was going to check it out solely based on the fact that he was on it. But a friend of mine demanded that I buy into the hype just because of how excited he was for it. His two verses repulsed me as can be expected, but I thought it was overall worth the listen.
Pitchfork
Pitchfork Jay-Z's on it too? Ugh. Talk about a reverse selling-point.
Pitchfork Big Boi's solo debut is another thing that I think was way over-hyped by Pitchfork. I don't know if good Pitchfork attention benefits rappers as much as it does with people like Sufjan Stevens though. I can't imagine the readership of Pitchfork is into hip-hop as much as it's into whimsical little baroque pop pieces.
Pitchfork You're very right, clutnuckle, the review they wrote was trash. 3/4 of it wasn't even about the album, it was about Kanye West's life, image and integrity. But I do disagree about Jay-Z, some of my favorite moments on the album are moments where he is rapping. Yes, he's pompous, but I respect the guy, and him being cocky doesn't annoy me in the least. Lame? Not at all.
Pitchfork 10.0 was definitely just a shock-value. Knowing P4k's history with Kanye, they definitely legitimately liked it, but I'm pretty sure it's still just a shock-value kind of thing. The album has so many obvious flaws that I doubt even a Pitchforkist could look past, namely the fact that Jay-Z ruins any song he touches with his pomposity and general lameness. Plus 10.0 is typically an album they see as 'revolutionary' in some way... The review they wrote for Kanye's new album is just... Really boring and hard to read, like some of their other stuff. They definitely don't hold it up on that high of a pedestal. I can't believe I just wrote about Pitchfork AGAIN... I thought I escaped this.
Pitchfork I didn't pass any judgement on what i thought the music press was MEANT to be about. I also didn't take a dump on Pitchfork. Infact I said i don't read it. I said that I personally have no reason to pay any attention to it or any other music press for that matter.
Pitchfork I'm in full agreement here. They're Indie's Rolling Stone. = / True, but don't you find the whole thing kind of pathetic? Instead of seeking out things for themselves, people would rather have someone else (AKA Pitchfork or some other publication) put an opinion in their mouth, followed by brazenly wearing it on their sleeve as evidence that their taste is music is superior to someone elses. It's always been that way I know, but that's no excuse for folks to sit on their asses and rally behind crappy biases. I mean, Christ, where did the desire to learn and experience things for oneself disappear off to? Loving them or hating them isn't even worth the effort involved when you could be listening to something interesting instead. And finally, I could care less how appealing their approach is to those who indulge themselves in this sort of trash: anyone who writes off King Crimson, ELP, and everything Yes did after Close to the Edge as "grotesque", yet acknowledges such groups' influences on the musicians they adore isn't worth piss in my book.
Pitchfork Even if they made it the top million songs I would still bitch about it.
Pitchfork TLDR who cares anyway
Pitchfork I was reading Pitchfork when they first came out and along with CMJ, Mojo and Puncture (now defunct) it was a great place to find great new artists.
