'01 Buick Regal, "Check Engine Light" stays on. Any ideas?

We just recently bought the car, so we have no track record of it. It was on when we cranked the car, but went off during the test drive, only it come back on about 200 miles later, after we bought it. It is a 3.8L, V6, LS model with 167,000 miles on it, but the engine looks very clean. What do you think the problem is? Thanks!

If the light comes on then that can be checked with a tool that plugs into the car. I don't like advertising but I have heard on the radio that AAMCO will hook up your car to that tool and tell you what is wrong for free.
