Moved To D.c. Area. Need To Get Phone. Need Advice.

Yep, Muggs, I live IN South Riding. My dead zones are on Old Lee Rd at Braddock. Then, just south of Braddock on Pleasant Valley. My service fades in and out while I'm in my house.

My very greatest sympathy regarding not getting your phone. If you get another phone, and still use Cingular, I'd be greatly curious to see if you have my two most annoying dead spots.

    Best wishes!

    Hey SkwerlG
I live near the plaza (blockbuster etc.) My company is paying for the monthly plan, however it is GSM the phone I HOPE TO GET SOMETIME SOON. So if I get dead zones I can always go to T-Mobile, they provide GSM too right?
I JUST WANT MY PHONE MAN...THATS IT.

I'm a couple miles from you. I'm just north of where Lands End comes up from Braddock (southeast "corner" of SR).

I have no idea about GSM and T-mobile. I want a phone that works. I don't have a land line. But I also only receive maybe 3 calls per week, so I'm not a cell phone fanatic as many people around here probably are.

    Keep us posted.

Well, I finally got my phone. The guy from W.I. did send it overnight. :-)
Now I am still deciding, should I go Cingular or T-mobile.
    Crap.
Hard decision. I just dont want to commit to a 2 year plan. 1 year would be good.

    Muggs,

T-Mobile and Cingular are both GSM. T-Mobile only operates on the 1900 MHz band while Cingular operates both 850 and 1900 MHz (hint, more coverage without roaming). T-Mobile will roam to 850 if the phone is so equipped. The Jam has two flavors of phones. 900/1800/1900 and 850/1800/1900. I'm not sure which you go. If you got the former it would not matter if a carrier works on 850. You can't use it. I have T-Mobile and I'm fine with it in most places except Farmland, Iowa. Get 3 miles away from I-80 and you can't get a thing there...

I'd call a carrier customer service number and ask if they have month to month plans without a phone.

I live in Falls Church, and basically hit all the points in the DC Metro area in a week. Cingular has been pretty reliable for me, I've been notcing my service being iffy, but thats because with the merger and all of the tower work. Cingular and Verizon are about toe to toe in DC. If you take the Metro (our subway system) alot, Verizon does work on it. But if you want a GSM phone, Cingular is the way to go. I recommend you stick with Nokia or Sony Ericsson, I've had nothing but back luck with Motorola's... plus I think their menus are slow and software inferior.

Also pretty sure you can start month-to-month with Cingular... I did when I first signed a few years ago.

    Thanks guys...
    Also an update.
My phone is a K-JAM (so its QUAD BAND )

I am thinking of going with cingular cause they give me a 6% discount since I am a foreign government employee.
Also the guy said he would wave the 1 year contract activation fee and no deposit.

its the $89.99 bundle (1350 mins with roll over, evening and weekends free, text messages, 1MB email/website etc.)
I guess thats good. In canada they have evenings and weekend free from 7 or 8 ( i use to have 6) but here in the states they have 9pm (that sucks!!!)

Oh well we will see...I will keep you guys updated
