So I'm looking for a smart phone

and I haven't been keeping good tabs on the current market or technology lately.

I'm looking for a smart phone that does the following. Under no circurmstances will I get either an iphone, or a phone running windows mobile, all other OSs are on the table.

    1. qwerty keyboard preferable, but not mandatory.
    2. wifi connection.
    3. GSM 3g data, either unlockable, or unlocked. I will primarily need this to work with t-mobile, but may use it elsewhere.
    4. decent app support for desktop type apps(ssh, IM, email, web browser, etc...)
    5. Needs to be relatively durable. read: rain proof.
    6. As least bling blingy as possible, and not excessively large either.

Which ones have you looked at?

Which GSM carrier will you use? T-Mo 3G only works on T-Mo, at least in the US, so if that is important, we need to know.

So I'm looking for a smart phone

so far I've looked at the N900, and the Motorola Cliq.

I like what I hear about andriod, but any sort of *nix would be pretty cool.

can the cliq be upgraded to android 2??

what are the hardware specs (cpu/ram/storage), and what upgrade and PC sync options do I have?

Again, battery life, and durability are at a premium

nexus one outperforms both of those phones you are looking at...i dont see why you wouldn't get a nexus one (unless you really want verizon service).

I dunno, I really haven't been keeping tabs....

how does the nexus one stack up on battery, durability and size, I'm leaning more to the cliq as the n900 is short of battery life.

On top of the coolness and gizmos I need it to be a cellphone first.

From what I've heard, the Nexus One is a good cell phone. I would say look into that.
