Why do British people love to complain?

Why is that here in Britan we complain about things all the time? We seem to spend a lot of time moaning and griping about something and yet do nothing to alter it. Politics being one example where people blast the government but do not get of their backside and vote themselves. Is complaining a very British trait or do other cultures and countries do the same? Or is that a stereotype that I have fallen for?

Yes, it´s a very British thing. It seems to me the only time we British stand together is when our backs are against the wall and some-one or thing is threatening her. Then we stand up and are counted. I don't live in Britain but I am sick of the Brits that also live where I live moaning about their country but if they have probs they go back for health or financial reasons. We do have backbone but sometimes it gets lost in the body. We have too many do-gooders and at the time seems a good idea but in the long run cripple's us but because it might not be political correct, no-one speaks out, but that is why every one moans.

    I live in the UK.
    It's not really a stereotype.

We're not all really that miserable, we just love to moan.
    It's how we communicate.

Meeting your friends. As soon as you see them it's not 'Hello, how you doing?'
you just start off on a rant about something.

We're more realistic (and sometimes pessimistic) than some idealistic places.

It's not depressing, it's just honest.
I can't be cheesy to save myself.
I don't even have a happy sounding voice- totally mellow and monotone.

We can't be bothered with the effort, but we're nice people

I think you're right - I think we do complain a lot. But at the moment there is reason to, and we're all sick of the way things are turning out. We've been let down by the government and people are wanting to make their voice heard after putting up with too much for too long.

I *think* all our grumbling is a recent thing, and a result of the injustice in this country. But perhaps Brits have always been like this??

Yes... and if there's nothing to complain about, we complain about the fact there's nothing to complain about

because theres so many problems to complain about.

Immigration, Jobs, overcrowding, equal equality, exc exc.

if there were no problems there would be nothing to complain about..

I'm not British but I've never noticed that from either when I spent time there or of the British transplants here in the US>
