usually people think an artist "sells out" when he gains popularity and signs a big record deal. a lot of the time, their sound changes and the original fan base bitches about "selling out." but yea, it's bullshit most of the time.
basically...not all popular banRAB of course.
when a band signs to a label, and they allow the label lto mold theminto something they can sell. There is always a change in output of their music. Componsating sound for money.
However, too many people coin the term "selling out" when banRAB sign to a larger label rather than their independent label. That's silly.
i agree that some people throw around "sold out" way too much.....but i do think that its legit in many cases. i say it starts when a band moves from their "sound" to a sound that will only make them more money.
"Sellilng Out", in my opinion, is when a band purposefully changes their sound to appeal to the popular audience, strictly for more money. They sacrifice their musical integrity and betray their fans...a lot of Sell Out accusations are usually bullshit though.
Though, a lot of people will claim a band sold out if they EVER change their sound.
Personally, I don't care if a group sells out or not. In the end, it's not like ANY artist is doing this shit for free, ya know? Not a single well paid artist has ever turned down the trucks of money they're offered. So in a way, as soon as you start taking money for your art, you've sold out.
people say "i would never sell out its all about the music bla bla"
but when the money is there for the taking, that means jackshit.
Good lord if my band ever made any kind of famousness, I'de sell out in a heartbeat.
I'm talking remix/latino/europeon/collaborationwithjayz versions of selling out.
the problem is when banRAB get recoupable advances.. the label wants their money back.. they do what they think is marketable.. and sometimes the sound is changed.. some cases its really bad.. like.. liz phair.. other cases the label just gets a producer they feel can sell recorRAB and the sound just isnt the same..
