Aaron, these are terrible stories I've read here. Last month I was downloading what I thought was a legal adult movie and when I previewed it halfway through I saw it was kp. Needless to say I deleted it but everything I've read here has me extremely scared and paranoid. I keep hearing the only way to truly rid something from your hd is to destroy the drive itself. I was in the market for a new computer anyway and from all I've read I'm tempted to just destroy this one and go ahead and get a new one. And thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm just scared. I stupidly downloaded a few child pornography images out of some reckless impulse. I don't want my world to obliterate as a result. I was an idiot for that. I'm a college educated student with many opportunities, and I do something so mindless...for what, some stupid self-indulgence that's pointless and illegal? I don't understand this still...I'm trying to make sense of it. I'm still trying to understand a temporary lapse of reasoning and a moment of...derangement?...that crossed my mind.

I don't need my life to be ruined by a judicial process and incarceration because of this. I've suffered torment already just worrying.

It would help me if I knew how long it typically took for police to execute a search and seizure warrant. Does it take hours? - Days? - A week?
A month?


How long must I worry until I can move on and accept the idea that I screwed up, made a mistake, and can continue with my life. I don't want to suffer because of a 1:00 a.m. impulse.

And still, I feel if I do end up investigated...I'm going to prison no matter what. It seems like the law is set up entirely against you. Lawyers carry enormous expenses on the federal level, and the law is just going to call you guilty. I doubt I could use some pathos - soothing argument on a jury, reminding them that they too are human and have made mistakes, and may regret many mistakes in THEIR lives.

This isn't fair. This isn't right. I'm sorry for everything, but I'm fearing the worst... It's hard to find pride when all I feel are shame and paranoia.

i browse folks who download from me and I wound up there as he/she was downloading a file

As BCI said, it is highly likely that you were sharing these CP files because, unless your app is configured otherwise, LW will share all your downloads by default.

Also, there are so many files marked with false names it is quite easy to download what you think are ordinary files and on inspection find that they are something else.

I guess you will have to convince the authorities that you did not know you had these files and, I suspect, did not know you were sharing them as well.

It works better if you don't reformat the disk because all the existing data
moving around overwrites the sectors that used to have the offending data.

Since you "emptied" the disk first, you'll have to get one of those secure delete
tools to scrub all of that empty space now.

That sounds more like superstition than caution. Just defrag the drive and that
will scrub the last whiff of the picture out of there.

Thanks Bob, and do you know if this "possession" can be proved from possible accidental sharing or must it be found in the physical form on the persons computer, as many people in this thread have evidently accidentally come across this stuff with partial download sharing enabled and sharing their download folder before they could delete it.

I ask this because I dont remember anyone who has ever been arrested who wasnt found with this stuff on their computer (US cases as well)

Are you sure you had the IP address? If things were that simple, in the US anyway, you would have cops doing the same thing. Unless I'm wrong a cop with a IP address one can go to Dell or whoever and find out who the machine is registered with for warranty purposes.

Making that knowledge public in most Western countries will scare off every CP distributor of note.

Over the past few years many have come here and complained about accidently downloading CP (and often demanding that Limewire do something about it). Indeed, this thread is 34 pages!

Never heard of any of them getting busted. The FBI didn't come after me, and I got a couple of CP files that were mis-named. Another file I downloaded by accident was actually labeled PTHC and turned out to be a Betty Boop cartoon. I changed the name and kept the file.

To the FBI: The disk with the CP crashed so I got a new computer and recycled the old one. And I am certain Ms Boop was over 18 when she made the film.
