If there is no visible life in a pond, does that mean that the pond is "unhealthy" ?

I went up to a pond in the park, and there were no visible organisms, but an alligator-and don't say that the alligator ate em all- and if you could please give me some reference, that would be great, thanks. And, best answer will be rewarded by tomorrow. Thanks!

its possible that fish, pond insects etc, would stay in the bottom of the pond in this cold weather, and after all you couldn't see whats on the bottom!
