Is it possible to activate a phone with Rogers or Fido (w/o contract) that you buy...

...from somewhere else? I'm planning on buying a BlackBerry Bold off of my brother for a good deal and I want to activate it with a Canadian cell phone provider (Rogers, Fido, etc). Will they allow me to activate a phone I've purchased elsewhere?
