Nexus One vs Samsung Galaxy S

Ok My wife got the Vibrant and I have to say, I prefer my N1. Touch wiz is slow despite all ways of managing it. It crashes running 3-4 apps often. The specs beat the N1 in every way, but in my opinion, the skin ruins it.

I wish I had the 4 in. Super AMOLED on my N1 and the better GPU. For those side by side comparing the two, TW 3.0 is not as light as one would think.

Besides Samsung will give 1 update since they have so many phones to care about. No way will they provide a 3.0 update. Can anyone name a samsung phone that was updated twice?

Lastly, the build quality, lack of notification light and flash are unforgivable. It feels cheap despite having awesome internals.

With that said I do think the phone is the best T-Mobile has to offer and will continue to show high bench marks. But I love vanilla android the best

The plastic used on the Samsung Galaxy S might feel cheap --- for some reason, Asians perceive glossiness as a sign of luxury, which is the exact opposite of Western tastes for matt and satin --- subjectively, but it feels unbreakable. Though I won't suggest deliberately trying it, I am very confident this phone will take a fall, and in fact, I have more confidence of the Galaxy S impact abilities than most phones out there.

I don't know what kind of plastic Samsung used on the phone, but its far from your ordinary plastic no matter what it feels like. I got far more confidence of Samsung as an engineering institution, than let's say, most of everyone out there.

But still, Samsung got weird tastes, they love things which in the West would hate --- neon colors, glossy mirror like plastics and surfaces... I still remember their phones, and LG's as well, where every number you dialed has a different neon color.

Using Launcher Pro (or any other launcher for that matter), will greatly increase the speed. Especially if you tweak the Advanced Opening speeds in the LauncherPro settings.

Replacing the stock browser with Dolphin browser makes a big difference.

Turn off the Samsung keyboard and use the Android keyboard (vibrate only) and that solves any keyboard lag.

I have the Captivate and made those changes (among other tweaks) and now this thing flies like it's supposed to. TouchWiz causes a LOT of problems with Android apparently.

Kill off DRM services from Running Services, from Managing Applications. This is a non standard service and its not on any other Android phone. This slows down access to caching in the SD memory. Once you do this, caching apps will speed greatly and some apps will stop crashing.

It appears the US versions of the Galaxy X has the standard Android keypad. I don't. My alternatives besides the the Samsung keypad is Swype, which I use and its really very good, and a Chinese entry system.

If you really like super fast browsing, try Opera Mini 5.1. Its good for quick opens and glances, though if you want to stay longer on a page, where you must need to do more precise zooming and pinching, as well as gesture actions, use Dolphin Browser. I recommend the standard Dolphin 3.0 browser than the HD 2.x one. The interface is more intuitive and nicer on the std. 3.0 browser than the HD 2.0 browser, and it feels faster too. I feel there are somethings that were done on the HD 2.0 browser that seems more optimized to the HTC handsets. For better speeds on the Dolphin browsers, turn off the SD card option, so the cache is done in the fast internal memory. The Galaxy S has more than enough int memory for this compared to other Androids.

I just can't get away from the nexus, even though the galaxy has better hardware. The nexus is like a blank android template that can take any custom ROM in a few minutes. It's so open and easy to flash this device, a hackers dream. I prefer stock android by far above Samsung's UI. It's not even close. And the nexus build quality and materials is just top notch, much better than the feel of the galaxy s. I like my 500 dollar device to feel like its worth that.

Actually the Captivate is a solid device. Definitely feels like it's worth $499. Once Froyo is on it, it's going to be twice as fast as the Nexus One with Froyo. That GPU just sizzles.

I kind of like the Samsung Clock widgets, which are very clever. You click on them, you get full weather, stock and calendar apps that are almost as good as any stand alone and more visually appealing. The News brief app is nice too. Its those widgets that keep me using Touchwiz instead of Launcher Pro. Also, I kind of feel its Launcher Pro that's causing lag on my device, maybe not Launcher Pro by itself, but the fact it its actually multitasking two UIs at the same time, with TouchWiz the other.

I keep going back and forth between my N1 and the Captivate. There's something about the N1 that keeps me coming back to it. I know the hardware is better on the Sammy, but I keep missing the Nexus.

The Galaxy has a super AMOLED 4" screen and a better camera. The Nexus is easier to root and will get updates sooner. Given Samsung's promised android 2 on the behold only to take back that promise may be a factor as well..
