Hi, Oscars can grow up to 12 inches when they reach adult size, and whilst you can keep them alone depending on what size tank you get; you can get them a breeding mate (your LFS will point out a pair for you). They will be a pair that you know will get along together, as Oscars are a type of cichlid fish which can be very aggressive towards other fish species and of it's own kind. They need to live in a minimum tank size of 75 gallons as they do get quite large, and you need to take into consideration the one inch of fish per a gallon rule when deciding whether to buy one or 2. You should definitely get a tank size of 75 gallons plus so it will give them room to grow, if it's any smaller it will not only stunt their growth (which is not healthy!) but it will stress the fish as it will feel it's living in cramped conditions (it may not look like it to you, but believe me they are cramped!). Stress can lead to fish losses, so it's in their best interest to keep them healthy and happy. Make sure you keep their ph level at about 6.5-7.0, and the water at a temperature range of 75-82 F.
keeping a pair usially keeps em happy! feeding live foods from time to time will help! lots of live plants and regular water changes and conditioning will help!
