How can you get dehydrated of salt? And if sports drinks cut it?

I know that you can get dehydrated of salt if you work out in the heat without any water. But I always hear that people these days eat too much salt(a average dinner contains half a days worth of it). So how hard is it to lose a dangerous amount of salt and the need of sport drinks. I go to the weight room 3 times a week for 40 minutes, and run 2 miles 3 times a week. I bring a 20 ounce powerade to both of these and drink a lot of it each time. So explain the dehydration and if the powerade is worth it or not.

eating to much salt causes dehydration because salt sucks the water out of your body. they put a potaote is salt water and it shurnk 75%. when they put a potatoe in normal water it expanded 7%. understand? gateroade is water, salt, and sugar mixed. the sugar is for enegry, the salt is to make u want to drink more. do u have salt poisining? i drank gatorade once it tastes so bad and i threw up. but u can try it if u want.
