    never use a kit
go to a beauty supply stroe to get dye
since sometimes kits fade to an oily color (greenish-black-blue)
and they have a quick fading time

but yes of course you can just make sure you do use a gold base

Could I acheive this with a kit? What are good brands to get?

With light hair, I always advise people to use a semi-permanent first, before doing anything drastic. You can even buy the same brands and then mix them to get the colour you want.

Going from light to dark is drastic, but it will give you a new lease of life!

it can be difficult as many dark browns are ash or "green" based. Make sure you go for anything based, gold or if you are sure you don't want to go blond any time soon red. Red is more difficult to remove sometimes than black! so no neutral or cool tone browns. also before you dye it I suggest doing a gold or red filler treatment. This will help prepare your hair and insure even coverage. go somewhere like sallys I like wella semi-permanent hair color (in the blue boxes) low peroxide only deposit colors. They also have a gold intensifier you can add. once you go dark it will be nearly impossible to go light again. and once you are dark protect your color with hair spf sprays and conditioners, the sun will zap the color!
