Read "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn." It is set in Brooklyn around 1912 and goes forward.
Toni Morrison's "Jazz" is set in Harlem in the twenties.
Check out "The Great Gatsby." It is set in the twenties as well.

the book pharmakon by dirk wittenborn takes place in the 50s, most of it anyway. i don't think i'd recommend it to a 9th grader though, especially not for school.
1920s how about the great gatsby?

Well The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway both take place in the 20's.
