Her teeth dove into the orange's crisp
juicy center
as she wiped away drops of sweat
shaped like diamonds
that were falling down her forehead
from the fierce rays
of the scorching, summer sun

Her family was in the room
that rested kitty corner to hers
numbing themselves
with arbitrary pastimes
such as cards, knitting,
and moving their heads
to the ticking of the clock

Wide eyed, she looked out her window
at the breathtakingly blue lake
that sparkled and resembled
a thousand rippling jewels
blanketing the ground
with beauty, a certain ambiguity
and an unmistakable hunger

She clung to her teddy bear
and promised the tides
that ebbed and flowed as rhythmically
as the demons dancing in her head
that she would soon sacrifice herself
to their mysterious power
and let them take away every day to come
that she would otherwise spend indoors
with her pain that was too big
for her tiny, eleven year old mind
