    02 Suzuki Eiger starter problem?

I have an 02 Suzuki Eiger 400. I took the quad to Pismo beach and havent touched it again in almost a year. When i tried to start it up, the starter is really loud and sounds like the gears in it have broken and are just spinning around and rattling. (thats what it sounds like, who knows what it actually is) is there a way to check the starter or is there a starter rebuild kit i can buy?

    Thanks
