the phone is from at&t but i have t-mobile service and i was wondering if i was able use it or do i need to unlock it or something

No you can't use your phone with t-mobile until you unlock it from AT&T network provider .You can easily unlock your phone using network unlock code ..You can purchase code from online providers like TheUnlockSpot.com for reliable cost ..After unlocking the phone you can freely use it with any GSM sim ...
