He would be 200 years old this February.

It would seem that he would be Democratic today, but would he
be Republican back when he was alive? The early Republican party was against Catholics, Irish, immigrants and alcohol. Since he was the first Republican, and died immediately after the Civil War, it is unknown if he would have even have approved of how the Republican party behaved way back then.

Lincoln was, in the politics of his day, a liberal, and not just because he opposed the spread of slavery. He signed into law the first income tax, and made it progressive. When first elected to Congress, he lost his seat by questioning Polk's war of aggression in Mexico, the first US invasion of a foreign country, but very popular since it gained us vast amounts of land. As an attorney, he often represented poor people without charging fees. Presumably, he would still be a liberal today, and a Democrat.

He would be Republican. He didn't have liberal ideology. He was the first Conservative. Liberals these days only pretend to support black people to get their vote. Blacks hate republicans, because we ACTUALLY treat everyone equal, by not giving out any handouts.

    Good question.

I'm not sure what the republican party was about in those times.

I think democrats were once conservatives by today's standards.

    You may be right.

All I can say is cream rises to the top and a good man will be recognized.

    please do your homework
lincoln did not fight the war to free slaves
he in fact stated that he was doing this to preserve the union
he only stated the emancipation proclamation because the north was losing so bad
it was intended to persuade europe to pull its support from the south
and fill the ranks with negro soldiers
even general grant said that if anyone accused him of fighting the war to free slaves he would draw his sword on them
but its funny in our polititically correct world how all this gets left out
so i would say from a historical viewpoint he would be a republican

He was a republican. He would have been embarrased of Bush. Proud of Obama. A war he started with the intentions of freeing his fellow man.
