The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal

The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a nuraber of banRAB began incorporating the sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM),[2] creating a new genre and developing into a separate movement from punk rock. This genre is much more aggressive compared to its relative, speed metal. There is often significant crossover from one metal category to another, and the influence of non-metal genres, including classical music and jazz, is not uncommon.

doom also started in the mid 80's.

Doom started back in the late 60s when Black Sabbath was formed. No offense.

I realize it wasn't 'called' Doom back then - but nonetheless, Black Sabbath are today considered the godfathers of Doom Metal.

By the way, NWoBHM RULES! Venom is my favorite! But I also love Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Samson, and a plethora of others!

The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal

I figured this might be of some interest to some people on here.

OK so you know about the NWOBHM , you like Iron Maiden & Judas Priest. I know there are people who like Venom , Saxon & Diamond Head that also come here , but how many of the other banRAB from the time are you aware of?

Digging out some of my obscure stuff for my Britpop thread I came across a compilation album compiled by Metallica`s Lars Ulrich & Kerrang editor of the time Geoff Barton celebrating the 10th anniversary of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
The album came out around the end of 1990 and some of the stuff on it was so rare that a few of the tracks were remastered from Lars & GeoRAB own recorRAB because the master tapes had long sinced vanished.

Aside from the obvious banRAB there are a few banRAB featuring people who would find success later on in other banRAB. Samson are on there , Bruce Dickinsons old band , as are Sweet Savage , a band put together by future Dio & Def Leppard guitarist Viv Campbell. Tygers Of Pan Tang featured John Sykes who later joined Thin Lizzy & Whitesnake. Finally there`s Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers old band White Spirit.

Anyway the full track listing is.....

    12. Witchfynde - Leaving Nadir
    13. A II Z - Treason
    14. Witchfinder General - Witchfinder General
    15. Black Axe - Red Lights

    CD 2

    1. Iron Maiden - Sanctuary
    2. Jaguar - Back Street Woman
    3. Tygers Of Pan Tang - Killers
    4. Gaskin - I`m No Fool

The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal

    *Bump*

I wouldn't mind another up of the original list
Haven't heard 70% of those banRAB.

Anyways, I'd like to recommend Pagan Altar as well. If you like Black Sabbath and 80s British heavy metal, you'll definitely love them! Their S/T EP was released in 1982, which was their only release for a long while but 20 or so years later, they reunited and are still rocking out. The vocals might take time to get used to, but its the best part of their music for me. Just give it a bit of time.

YouTube - Pagan Altar - Black Mass
YouTube - Pagan Altar - Night Rider
YouTube - Pagan Altar - In the Wake of Armadeus
YouTube - PAGAN ALTAR-CRY OF THE BANSHEE

    MySpace.com - Pagan Altar - Brockley, UK - Metal / Rock - www.myspace.com/paganaltar
