unlike in the d60, you could turn the flash off using the macro mode. how could i turn my 450d off using the macro/portrait/etc?

Unless you are using a specialist macro lens all the macro programme mode does is select the appropriate settings to make the best of the kit lens.
I recommend that you take some control of the camera, only a little bit mind...
Turn the dial to P mode. You now have some more control over the camera. It will still auto expose and autofocus, and in this mode the flash will only fire if you tell the camera you want the flash.
Even better, use Av mode. Use a bigger number (say f8 or f11) to get more in focus, use a lower number (f3.5 or f5.6) to get less in focus.
The camera will do the rest for you.
I'm not being funny or condescending, but if you want to take anything more than basic photos then you need to take a little bit of control.
Look into a camera course or get a book on photography for beginners and use this in conjunction with your cameras handbook.
You'll get far far more out of the camera.
