How long does it take those really musically educated people to become familiar

with so many artists/classics? You know what I'm talking about, the ones who know their bands inside out, especially the classic rocker type. I've just always wondered how they came to be so familiar with all that material, because there is so much music out there, and I have about 50 albums to listen my way through at the moment, I can't imagine ever knowing my stuff that well. Maybe in 30 years

Well it would really help to have a musical upbringing. I have been listening to music since I was born. New stuff everyday. That's 26 years of music knowledge. The only way to do it is to have a passion for it. I don't go more than half an hour without music playing.

Here's a start: look up these bands:

Of Montreal-"Gronlandic edit"
Toadies-"Tyler"
The White Stripes-"Prickly thorn but sweetly worn"
Led Zeppelin-"In the Light"
Jethro Tull-"One brown mouse"

And if you've already listened to them, try looking for the less played songs by each artist. I spent MANY late nights listening to jams.

i'm 52, i treasure the experience of seeing a lot of modern music unfold first hand rather than the knowledge that comes from that experience.

There's almost unlimited knowledge out there. So really you could spend a lifetime learning everything but to get a really good base I would say around 3 years. But honestly it doesn't matter how much you know as long as you enjoy it. Whatever you do don't be a music snob. Learning about bands and music history is cool but if you're not doing it for fun then what's the point?
