I was dining at an Olive Garden when a hostess made a rude comment about someone

at my table? I was offended but told the waitress I would still tip my customary 25%. Should I have tipped way less due to the hostess?

So was this the hostess at the front door, but not the waitress? If the waitress was still very courteous and polite, then there would be no need to dock her tip because of someone else's rudeness. If it was the waitress herself, then I wouldn't have tipped at all. Either way, I would have asked to speak to a manager.

I would not have tipped at all. You have to earn your tip. I learned that from being a waiter myself at one time.

Was she being rude or just joking, if she was rude I would have made a comment to the manager.

You rewarded her for poor service..a real slap to those waiters and waitresses who give great service and are sometimes stiffed at the table! Not only would I not have tipped her, but I would have explained to the manager on duty just why I didn't. Their restaurant doesn't need this type of person on their staff.
