Along with food shortage, there is also the results of the war. Only a fraction of the Mayans survived after the conquistadors came and attacked them. They did not die from the attack, but mostly because the conquistadors brought a deadly disease. Many Mayans died. This perhaps caused the civilization slowly retreated to an end, especially after resources became scarce. Also, according to the scientists, there were three large droughts occurring between 810 and 910 A.D., each lasting less than a decade. Some say this was the cause of the remaining Mayan civilization to collapse. I hope I helped! Also, try searching this on google.com, you might find more results there.
They used their watering holes for sacrifices and in turn contaminated it. This lowered populations and when wars broke out the Mayan empire fell into disreppair.
So disease and war.
