Are teachers unions doing to our kids what the autoworkers did to GM?

The US was once once #1 in education...worldwide. Then the slide began in the 1970s and we're now in 9th place.

Some union workers can leave their jobs if the temperature goes below 68 degrees for 2 hours.

Is it time to de-unionize our most important profession ?

We need to invest in our future and boost education spending by 50%. Our teachers are doing an excellent job with limited resources.

What we need to do is to get the government OUT of education entirely. Privatization is the way to go.

Sure...blame the unions....what a pile! I suppose we could blame the unionized police for crime and unionized firefighters for fires. Buy a clue...teachers, unionized or not have ZERO control over management. Standards and procedures come from an elected state board and a series of elected local boards of education. The word comes down from above as to what to teach, how to teach it, what books to use and what outcomes are expected. Teachers get NO input into these things. The only thing teacher's unions get is a shot at collective bargaining every X number of years and a standard disciplinary hearing if you run afoul of some Micky Mouse rule. Auto workers didn't ruin the auto business...bad management did. We built terrific cars when engineers ruled Detroit...we built junk when the MBA's and the green eye shade boys took over. Way too much right wing radio, bro..way!

Teachers' unions can't; there is something in the equation called parental responsibility. The decline in education standards is directly related to parental complacency.

I fear it is too late. They wanted a nation of morons and after 40 years of liberal education, they got it.

Unions built & continue to improve the lives of middle-class Americans.

Like with many other beneficial institutions, right-wing ideologues spread misinformation in an effort to mislead gullible people into voting against their own best interests.

    Sadly, sometimes it works.

You completely discount the fact that the US auto industry fell behind in the quality, selection, and value of their product in the world market. That was a result of decisions made by the upper management of the auto makers, not the unions. That much more than unions had more to do with the US auto makers problems.

Only about 38% of US teachers are union members so to state that teachers unions are solely responsible for the falling US education rate is absurd and ridiculous.
