It gets expensive buying and registering bulk amounts of numbers. Verizon probably got sick of people who were abusing the privilege.
Last time I tried changing my number, it cost $20...
That's very interesting indeed, because as I said, a VerizonWireless rep told me $15 when I signed up for service a little over a week ago. I just happened to ask the question about "what if I wanted to change my phone number?", and he replied $15 UNLESS you were porting over a number, which would then be free.
Go figure... hmmm.....
We had someone in the office that just changed their phone number with verizon and were told the first switch is free and the second time is $15.00. However, if you can go back to the dealer you bought your Verizon phone from and they usually only charge you $10 to switch numbers. Depending how long or how short your've had the phone numbers you can probably get the fees waived just pick your strategy.
Thanks, Mark

Also, if you want to bypass the automated system: when you call, hit option #4 then press Zero. It will take you directly to a Verizon Rep.
Despite common belief, Verizon Wireless does not charge you to change your number.
They have the ability to tack on a $15 charge, but 99% of the representatives will waive this.
Also, be sure you do it on the start of your bill cycle or you could have some prorated fees which may in turn add up to a larger bill.
