    Teen Female Lump on Groin

I'm an eighteen year old female and I recently noticed a hard walnut or football shaped lump on my groin. It's on the right side, basically the inguinal area. I went to the doctor, she couldn't tell me what it was, but she measured it and it was 2 cm by 4 cm. I hurts only when pressure is put on certain spots. The size doesn't change when I stand or lay down. The skin over it looks fine, no redness, itching or anything. I don't have a UTI or anything like that, no symptoms of a vaginal infection and I'm not sexually active. Anyone know what it could be?

Did the doctor give you a diagnosis? I can imagine a few possibilities, but you may need to follow up with the doctor that examined you. You can simply call the office, and ask for the diagnosis over the phone. You can then ask if further tests are needed, or a referral to a specialist.

She said it might be a hernia, or an infected node. No tests were done and from what I've researched, it doesn't seem like either. The doctor gave me a referral to a see a general surgeon. Long story short, it was a doctor on campus and I'm an out of state student, so my insurance company won't cover the visit to the general surgeon, so I'm flying home and seeing my general doctor and if he isn't able to tell me what it is either, then I see the surgeon at home I guess.

    Teen Female Lump on Groin

I have two of these, one on each side, and recently found out that I have hernias. I'll be getting them repaired in November to prevent them from getting worse in the near future, but likely, I've had them my whole life (it's supposedly pretty rare to have two of them as a female). Mine DO flatten out as I lay down, so that's the only difference I notice from what you explain. It's possible for a hernia to not flatten out as well. My doctor also wasn't sure about it (they are probably similar in size, not all that large or obvious) so I saw a general surgeon, who identified what it was very quickly. I'd make sure to look into it sooner than later to make sure it isn't anything that requires attention quickly. It's possible that it may be a cyst as well... cysts can vary in size and would be hard and likely wouldn't move that much. They can also be painful. Or as you mentioned, an enlarged node may also be a possibility.

Did you notice this recently or has it been there for a while? Also, have you done any kind of activity that caused it? Heavy lifting or strenuous activity can cause hernias, but you can also be born with them, as my doctor believed I was. I never felt any pain or discomfort and always thought it was normal tissue since they are symmetric. Then one day I was working out and doing inner thigh exercises, felt some pain in the area and then a little bit of swelling. THEN I learned about hernias and thought it would be a possibility, especially since when I coughed, the lumps bulged a little bit. I am glad I asked my doctor about it and saw the general surgeon! Now I can get it taken care of and prevent anything from getting worse
