I am a high school senior and I have elected to demonstrate power factor correction as a science project. I have a 120 volt 60 hz induction motor from a washing machine. I have calculated the required capacitance, 105 mfd, and with this amount the PF is a disappointingly 0.85. If I add or subtract capacitance the PF goes down. I'm adding and subtracting capacitance at only 3.5 mfds at a time. The free running PF of this motor is 0.246. I'm using 370 volt motor run caps for testing and they all test good.
