all vehicles with manual transmitions (even automatics) should be in neutral or park(in the auto case) to be started... what would be the purpose of starting in 1st... get a rolling start?
This is normal. Most modern motorcycles have a safety lockout where they must be in neutral to be started.
Most will also shut down if they are put in gear with the side stand down.
should start with the clutch in, if it won't start in any gear with the clutch in, it's probably just the clutch switch or a loose connection there. I have my clutch switch disabled because I have a 2nd rear brake lever on the left side and had to disconnect the lead to the switch in order to mount the other brake right up next to the clutch perch. poppin it into neutral to start isn't that bigga deal
It will start in any gear as long as the clutch lever is pulled in - same as all Japanese motorcycles.
Defective or unplugged neutral safety switch (switch at the clutch lever).
