htc Hero text message problem?

Ok with the htc hero on sprint to send out a text to a contact their number has to be in ten digit format. I just got my phone the other day and i found this out quite quickly seeing i switched from verizon. Well i went through and fixed the needed contacts so the were ten digit format. I was texting one of my friends and he is on sprint also. for some reason when i was texting him, after he sent me one and i sent one back to him( just by clicking the "compose" button" it sent the text to him with just seven digit. So in return i got an error message. i made sure that his contact number was in the right format and it was. I have tried everything, deleted him, relisted him, different name, completely out of my phonebook... i dont know whatelse to try???? any help is really appreciated!!!!

I tried downloading the other message app still does same thing

Try downloading a different app from the Android Market place to do your SMSing. I use ChompSMS and SMSpop-up. Both apps are free.
